Learning, programs and support
Chatswood Public School follows curriculum guidelines provided by the Department of Education. These Key Learning Areas (KLAs) form the foundation for all planned learning experiences. They describe what students are expected to learn and help ensure every child receives a consistent and high-quality education.
In every classroom, learning is adjusted to meet the needs of all students. Teachers plan and deliver lessons that provide the right level of support and challenge, helping every child stay engaged and make progress.
Students are also encouraged to take part in a range of competitions and challenges across different learning areas to further enrich their learning.
- English: Students build literacy skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening to communicate confidently.
- Mathematics: Focuses on numbers, patterns, shapes, measurements, and problem-solving.
- Science and Technology: Encourages curiosity and exploration of the natural and built world using digital tools.
- HSIE (History & Geography): Helps students understand societies, cultures, and environments, past and present.
- Creative Arts: Allows students to express themselves through Music, Visual Arts, Drama, and Dance.
- PDHPE: Promotes health, wellbeing, positive relationships, and physical activity.
- LOTE (Languages): We offer Mandarin and Korean to support communication skills and cultural appreciation.

What students learn
Students learn a wide range of subjects in the NSW curriculum. They build skills, think creatively and prepare for life beyond school.
At our school, students can take part in special religious education (SRE) or special education in ethics (SEE) classes, depending on what’s available. These classes are delivered by approved providers.
At Chatswood Public School we currently offer:
- Catholic
- Islamic
- Combined Christian
- Buddhist
- as well as the SEE course provided by Primary Ethics.
Our classes are held on Thursday.
The SRE and SEE programs are taught by volunteers from organisations approved by the Department of Education. They are often parents, grandparents, carers or lay volunteers from a local congregation. The volunteers undergo a police background check, a working with children check and have been trained by the SRE or SEE organisations.
If you would like to change the course your child is currently enrolled in please send a written request to the office.
For more information on this program visit Religion and Ethics.
Our learning approach
Our school uses explicit teaching. This means we clearly tell students what they are learning, why it is important and how to do it step by step. Explicit teaching helps students understand new ideas by breaking them into smaller parts.
Learning at our school is student-centred, inclusive and practical. We are committed to equity and access. We support all learning styles and needs. Our teachers use proven teaching strategies. They take part in ongoing professional development to stay up to date with best teaching practice.
Our learning approach includes:

to help students learn and build digital skills
- Flexible teaching:
the right support for each student, with a focus on wellbeing
- Community connections:
through excursions and local programs
